Time goes fast
and I feel so happy because it is nice to know that we just miss two practices
more, and then we will finish this semester, for that reason, I decided to
videotape this class. This period I am teaching in Intermediate English II with
Teacher Geovanni Blanco.
Well, when I
knew the group I must teach I felt worried because I hadn’t taken a class with
Teacher Blanco, and I did not know his way to teach, so I decided to ask my
classmates who already taught that group with him, and they told me that he does not like to include
games or something like that in his classes. Then, after I observed the class I
could notice that he likes to teach a lot of grammar, and he also provides many
examples and exercises. Later, I had an idea on how to prepare my class.
In this class, I
taught the Modal verbs. It was not easy because in that level you must be
really careful with your grammar because your students can correct you, so
believe me that I needed to study Modals again, but it was not so difficult at
all.
For the Warm up, I used a song
named: “Could I have this kiss forever” by Enrique Iglesias and Whitney
Houston. I divided the class into two groups. I played the song three times.
The first one, they listened to the song; the second one, they order the
sentence, for that I used sentence strips, and at the third time, they pasted
the lyrics of the song on the board. Let me tell you that this activity was a
little tricky to develop because the girls of one group did not want to
cooperate, so believe me, I got angry for a while, but I tried to put my best
face through that situation.
Then, I
explained the grammar part. It was easy because I provide many examples and I
asked them to give more. It was nice because all of them wanted to participate,
so later, it was time to practice what they had learned. I provided two sheets
of paper with some exercises. For students, it was really tricky to solve them,
but all of them tried to do it. They asked me many questions and I felt so
comfortable answering them because I knew I was prepared, as you know you feel
satisfied. However, I spent many time answering their questions, and I couldn’t
make the oral activity that I had prepared.
To sum up, I can
say that after all, it was a nice class, and it is a good group, also as an
experience I can say that time can be your enemy when you teach because
sometimes you need to take more time than the one you had expected.

I totally understand your struggles when some students just don’t want to collaborate during your activities, actually that is happening to me with the group that I have :S. So I guess that I have to look for the right strategies to motivate them to participate.
All in all, congratulations about your nice class!! I like the song activity that you developed, I have put it into practice too because it’s pretty nice and entertained!
Hello Isabel! I see you tried to give your best as always. I taught that group; some students are clever. Look for ways to give them as much participation as possible so that they do not get bored. Regarding time,I know that it might play against us. We have 50 minutes to develop the activities, but remember that the lesson is felxible. Some aspects may take more or less than the expected time; furthermore, if there is a point yo need to enhance, you, as teacher, have to slow the pace of the class and clarify the doubts. I think you did a good job. Keep walking on the same path.
ResponderEliminarYes! We are about to finish, and believe me that I am eager to get a break. Your warm up is very nice because you involved all students to work as team. I really like the activities where you can interact with them, especially because music is an art of expression. They always like to participate, and believe me, they are a very good group. They are very smart, and it is easy for them to learn something new. I taught them, so I can tell you this. You just have to reinforce them and encourage them, that's all you need to succeed with this group. Cheers my dear anguila.

ResponderEliminarYou know, every teacher has his own way to teach. It is part of our process to know and try to emulate as many ways of teaching as possible to discover which is going to be ours :D
You did it well with the students, but remember....they are in a lower level than us, so....don't get angry, don't bother yourself paying attention to this. Not all the people like all the kinds of activities. Maybe they don't really like this type of activity. I know these girls mut have behaved but, you have to be always happy, ot at least try to use that mask.
I guess it was no a problem that you didn't develop all the activities because you were answering questions and maybe they learned more from these answers that what they could have learned from the activity you didn't develope.

Hello Isa!!Let me tell you that I think all of us are very happy and eager to finish this semester :) About you class, I think it was very nice, you had to work in another way and that is nice, because you get experience, remember we will learn something different from each teacher and then we will have our own style to teach. You did it baby!!! Congrats :)

ResponderEliminarI can imagine that you did your best in your class, and it was a nice idea to investigate about the teacher and the group.
Sometimes it is frustated when your students don't cooperate with you, knowing you spent a lot of time preparing the class and the activities for them. But as you did, we have to make a good face and keep ourselves moving and working with them.
Time as you mention, it is always an issue we will learn to control with the practice.
