MY THIRD CLASS

Today, I taught my last class in the Basic English course, and I could see that sometimes as teachers you have many problems at home, but you need to leave them there, and  you must be ok order to give the class. First of all, I was really worried, I had not slept so well because my mom was at the hospital since Sunday, so as you know, I needed to be with her there, and believe it or not I prepared the lesson plan there.

There is a quote which says: “If plan A does not function, there are more letters in the alphabet to try more times”. Sometimes, technology does not help you, and it is important that if you will use an LCD projector or another machine, you should have another lesson plan in which you do not need to use them. It was my case; I prepared a video because I needed to teach the Simple Present Tense. At the very beginning the LCD projector did not function, so I was ready to use my plan “B” or “C” because I had three different lesson plans. I told that to the teacher; however, he told me that he could fix the problem, and also he told me that I shouldn’t be nervous. Well, ten minutes later, we could fix the problem, and of course, I started to teach the class.

I started with the warm up, and with that activity I taught vocabulary (verbs) and I developed the activity “Guess what I mime”.

After that, I taught the Grammar part because the video was like an introduction. Then I asked students to fill in the blanks some sentences. It was nice because I could see that they had understood the topic, and of course, it was a satisfaction to me when all of them wanted to participate to give the answer to that exercise. At the end of the class, I made the “Hot Potato”. The one who had the “potato” came to the front and changed the verb to the correct form according to the rules I had explained before.

To conclude, what I can say is that I had a great experience teaching in that level because those have been my first experiences teaching a group. At the end of the class I thanked my students and the teacher because they helped a lot, also I brought some candies. Now, I just can say that I’m ready to teach another class!!!

SECOND CLASS

In this week I taught the family members and the use of the possessive. I really liked this topic because I could prepare something different for my students. In the warm up I decided to share a Power Point Presentation on my family members using my own pictures (my family tree), but before that I gave them a sheet of paper with the vocabulary because I wanted to they got familiar with the family members. I consider that it was nice because students did not get bored, and of course, it was not a common activity that a teacher could make.

In my lesson plan I prepared a PDP (Pre- During- Post). The video that I presented was about the family members in order to learn the vocabulary.

Here is the video that I presented on my class:

Then students needed to make couples in order to share orally about the video. They answer the following questions with their own information:

1. Who lives in your house?

2. How big is your family?

3. How many relatives do you have?

4. How many brothers and sisters do you have?

5. Do you have any nieces or nephews?

Those questions were presented on the video.

After the video, they made the page 16 and 17 of the book. Those exercises were about a family, so they needed to read, and then to make the exercises.

In the grammar part I taught the use of the Possessive. I tried to write on the board some examples related to them, for example: Rebeca's notebook, so I could see that they understood the topic, and at the end of the class they made an activity to use the possessive case. It was on page 17 of the book.

Well, it was How I can describe about my class, now, I'm going to tell you my experience. Let me tell you that this time I really enjoyed when I was teaching my students. I felt really comfortable, I did not get nervous, and I consider that I could catch their attention, so to sum up, I'm happy with the job that I made, but of course, I know that I can improve some things...

MY FIRST CLASS...

I am teaching in Basic English with Teacher Roberto Carlos. First of all, I must say that it is a nice group because it just has fifteen girls and just one boy. They put attention in every class because most of them are repeating that subject. Something curious that I have observed there is that is strange when students go to the bathroom or outside the classroom while they are in class, and if they really need it; they ask for permission.

I taught the last Wednesday. Let me tell you that I was nervous. My topic was Fractions. It was my first experience teaching  because I had not had the opportunity to teach before, except in public school. I prepared everything, and also I tried to present all the necessary materials (flashcards, charts, markers, eraser, etc) as nice as possible because I know that when you teach, you have a big responsibility, and your students deserve the best from you.

Teacher Roberto Carlos told that at the beginning of the class I needed to check a homework on the ten more unusual professions. I knew what the homework was about, and that’s why  I investigated  about it because I did not what that my students told me or asked me something that I did not know.  I made some flashcards on those professions, and  I checked it, but in the feedback he told me that I just focused on one student  (It was wrong)

Something that desperate me was that as students are taking Basic English, they did not understand the warm up at the beginning, so I realized that I needed to make more gestures in order to express what I wanted they to do, so I consider that it functioned at the end.

I just know that when someone is nervous he/she can make really basic mistakes, and it was my case. I wrote on the board “eigth” instead of “eight”, and when I noticed the problem I just changed it, but believe me, I felt really bad.

When I was in the wrap up I felt so glad because they saw my students so happy too, and all of them were smiling. I discovered that the topic was understood; they performed the activity, and also they enjoyed working on the floor.

Well, talking about my experience in general; it was nice because I could teach a real class. I know that it was just the beginning of my teaching practicum, and I consider that the other classes  I would do it better. I would give my best!
